The platform is rolling out a new feature that permits them to reduce the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features in excess of 1 bn content made with AI.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent video-generation tools.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that almost 10% of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” said a company executive.
Volume and Proportions
The platform shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, over 100 m videos are uploaded to the app every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be capable of reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they watch by using the topic control option in the app and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting cover current affairs, fashion, beauty, and choreography.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its rules mandate creators to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the app will from now on attach an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This action is designed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the tagging system.
Responsible AI Funding
The company is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for professionals and groups to develop educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist non-profit groups dedicated to training programming and robotics.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its content review process, amid debate over plans to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. TikTok is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
